“Thunderbolts 2025 – Meet Marvel’s Dark Superheroes!”

Thunderbolts (2025) Movie Review

Thunderbolts, the new team movie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is set in 2025 with its anticipated anti-hero story. Directed by Jake Schreier and starring Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), David Harbour (Red Guardian), Wyatt Russell (John Walker/US Agent) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Valentina Allegra de Fontaine), the movie draws attention as a production in which the MCU turns to dark tones.

Plot and Themes

Thunderbolts plays with the concept of a “government-sponsored cavalry group” as in Marvel comics. The team, assembled by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, is made up of individuals who have been villains or gray characters in the past but have potential heroic qualities.

The film focuses on themes such as “the definition of heroism” and “redemption” as these characters come to terms with the past, their trust issues, and the process of learning to be a team.

The stories of Bucky Barnes and Yelena in particular continue the development of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Black Widow. John Walker’s dilemmas and Red Guardian’s contribution to the funny yet poignant scenes add to the emotional depth of the movie.

Strengths

  • Performances: Florence Pugh (Yelena) and Sebastian Stan (Bucky) carry the movie. David Harbour’s Red Guardian balances humor and drama.
  • Action Scenes: Winter Soldier’s knife fights and Taskmaster’s (new version) abilities reflect the MCU’s character-driven sense of action.
  • The movie strikes a balance between Captain America: Civil War and Black Widow, with scenes that are both dark and funny.
  • Villain Twist: The fact that Thunderbolts’ main enemy is an unexpected character manages to surprise the audience.

Weaknesses

Fast Transitions: Some characters (Ghost, Taskmaster) don’t have enough backstory, which can weaken the emotional connection.

  1. Marvel Clichés: The “powerful but artificial” CGI in the final fight and some repetition of dialog recapitulate known problems of the MCU.
  2. Valentina’s Role: Julia Louis-Dreyfus is great, but her character’s motivations remain unclear.

Conclusion and Evaluation

Thunderbolts is one of the MCU’s bold steps in Phase 5. Despite its Suicide Squad-like concept, it offers a unique flavor thanks to the characters’ inner conflicts and chemistry. It promises a satisfying experience for those looking for emotional depth as well as action.

However, the film’s inability to break away from Marvel’s general mold and some hasty narrative choices prevent it from fully realizing its potential.

Rating:3.5/5
Recommended for: The Suicide Squad (2021), Captain America: Civil War and Black Widow.
